What to look for when choosing towels.

Towels are something you use everyday, and choosing thick, luxury towels is an easy way to elevate your daily living. There’s nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a big fluffy towel after a shower.

Here’s what to look for when choosing towels.

Types of Towels

There are a huge variety of towels available for different purposes. The most common types are listed here.

Bath towels

The standard bath towel set includes a range of matching towels (sizes vary slightly by supplier):

  • Bath towels - Standard bath towels are usually about 70cm x 140cm
  • Bath sheets - Bath sheets are like bath towels but larger, usually about 80cm x 160cm
  • Hand towels - Hand towels are usually about 40cm x 70cm
  • A bath mat and face washer are generally included in a bath towel set as well

Bath towels tend to be all one colour, but sometimes they are patterned.

Beach towels

Beach towels are for using after a dip in the pool or at the beach. They are generally patterned or striped, featuring vibrant colours. They most commonly have a velour front and a terry back. Round beach towels are all the rage at the moment, and are typically about 150cm round, often with fringing. Check out our sand free beach towels to complete your towels collections!

Kids towels

Kids towels are smaller size towels that typically have a motif on them for decoration. There are also hooded towels and ponchos available - wearable products with a hood, yet open on each side.

Exercise towels

An exercise towel is for wiping yourself and your equipment down after working out. Our Bambury microfiber range is ideal for this purpose. As well as being super lightweight, moisture wicking and quick-dry, some of these gym towels have a zip pocket in them so you can pop your keys or your phone in there while you’re working out.

Body wraps and hair wraps

Similar to exercise towels, Bambury microfiber body and hair wraps are designed for personal or commercial use. They are frequently seen at day spas, massage centres and chiropractors. These wraps are similar to towels, but with an elasticised top band with velcro, that are worn a bit like a dress. Ultra absorbent, they can absorb up to 7 times their weight in moisture. They are compact, lightweight, and easy to travel with, and wick moisture away from the skin. The hair wrap works the same way, so by the time you’re dressed after your shower your hair is relatively dry and ready to blow dry.

Other categories of towels you may see referenced include kitchen towels/tea towels, quick dry towels (generally referring to a Turkish cotton towel), and hotel/luxury towels (generally referring to any luxurious, thick towel, e.g. our Christie Supreme range).

Composition

Different materials are good for different things. The most common composition of towels for sale includes:

  • Cotton - Whether normal cotton, Egyptian cotton or Turkish cotton, cotton is extremely absorbent.
  • Bamboo - Bamboo is lightweight and antimicrobial, great for those who suffer from allergies.
  • Microfiber - this tends to be used in products such as sports towels, body wraps and hair wraps.

Questions to ask when choosing bath towels

When choosing bath towels, you should ask questions such as:

  • What is the GSM (Grams per square meter) of the towel?
  • What material is the towel made from?
  • What colour palette is the towel in?
  • Does the towel have banding?
  • Is the towel ribbed?
  • Do I want something that has a design, check or stripe, or something plain?
  • Do I want tassels and fringing or something more standard with hemming?

There’s no right or wrong answers, but the answers to these questions will tell you if you’ve found a match for your needs. Knowing the answer to each of these questions can give you confidence in the product, even when you buy towels online and can’t see and feel every detail.

Colours

Towels come in a full spectrum of colours, though there tends to be more of a selection in colours like white, cream, blue, green, and grey. Pops of brighter colours are available but there are usually fewer options. Patterned bath towels are also available in some ranges.

Some colour selections for towels include:

FAQs:

Are Turkish or Egyptian cotton towels better?

Both Turkish and Egyptian cotton towels offer longer staple fibers and therefore are extremely absorbent. The main difference is that Egyptian cotton is a little bit more absorbent, but slower to dry, whereas Turkish cotton is a little bit less absorbent and therefore quicker to dry.

Turkish cotton beach towels are typically thin, lightweight and great for travel, but will absorb water well too.

What is the difference between a bath sheet and a bath towel?

The difference between a bath towel and a bath sheet simply comes down to size. A standard bath towel is roughly 70cm x 140 cm, while a bath sheet is about 80cm x 160cm. Hotels tend to use bath sheets for that more luxurious feel. Bath sheets are also preferable for people who struggle to get enough coverage from a standard towel.

How do I care for my towels?

When you get your towels home for the first time, it is advisable to wash them with just a cup of white vinegar in your machine, no washing liquid or fabric softener. This is because there’s a coating applied to towels during manufacturing that doesn’t allow for water to be well absorbed into the towel. A cup of vinegar will strip this back.

We don’t recommend routinely washing your towels with fabric softener because that will reapply a similar coating. Stick to standard washing detergent, and only use fabric softener if your towels are getting a bit rough, perhaps once a month at most. If you’re finding they’re not absorbing well, wash again with white vinegar again to restore absorbency.
